Samed Nang Chee: Sunrise, Bay View Café & a Phuket Day Trip Guide

Samed Nang Chee, also written Samet Nangshe, is a hilltop viewpoint in Phang Nga province overlooking the limestone islands and mangrove forests of Phang Nga Bay. It is reached by road from Phuket, making it a rewarding outing for travelers who want wide coastal scenery, sunrise photography or a café visit with a view.

The main viewpoint, Bay View Café at Sametnangshe Boutique and Beyond Skywalk Nangshi are separate visitor venues in the same area. Choose your destination before setting off: their entrances, transfers, tickets and opening hours should not be treated as interchangeable.

Our photo selection includes sunrise, stargazing and camping scenes taken in 2016, alongside café photographs. Those older images show the landscape and an earlier visitor experience; facilities and access arrangements may look different today.

Where is Samed Nang Chee?

The viewpoint is in Khlong Khian, Takua Thung district, Phang Nga, on the mainland north of Phuket. You do not need a boat to reach it. From Phuket, the road journey passes through the bridge crossing to the mainland before continuing toward the hills overlooking the bay.

From above, the appeal is the whole landscape: green mangroves in the foreground, winding waterways and limestone formations stretching into the distance. It is a different perspective from sitting on a Phuket beach or traveling between islands.

If you enjoy the story behind the journey, our Sarasin Bridge history and visitor guide explains the old bridge beside the modern road crossing.

Why visit the viewpoint?

Samed Nang Chee suits travelers who enjoy landscapes and taking time to look around. You can watch the light change across the bay, photograph the limestone silhouettes or build a slower morning around a meal with a view.

It can also suit people who want a scenic outing without spending the day on a boat. However, access still involves a hillside environment: steps, slopes and transfers can matter for children, older travelers and anyone with limited mobility.

Allow around one to two hours at your chosen venue as a planning starting point. Add time for a meal, photography or queues. Sunrise enthusiasts may prefer to stay longer as the landscape changes from darkness to daylight.

Samed Nang Chee in 2016 and today: what has changed in ten years?

When we visited Samed Nang Chee in 2016, getting to our viewing spot meant walking uphill for about 20–30 minutes. The place we remember was largely jungle, without the developed café facilities seen on our more recent café visit. The attraction was the landscape itself: climb up, wait for the first light and watch the bay emerge from the darkness.

There was very little artificial lighting around the spot we visited. We remember being able to appreciate the Milky Way in that dark setting when conditions were suitable. This is our recollection of that visit, rather than a measured claim of zero light pollution.

Today, a visit to Bay View Café offers a more comfortable way to enjoy the area. On the café visit described here, the uphill shuttle journey took about five minutes, with seating, food and drinks waiting above.

We have not confirmed that our 2016 viewing spot is the exact location occupied by Bay View Café today. The comparison shows how our experiences of visiting the Samed Nang Chee area have changed. It does not establish that the café was built on that particular campsite or that the old walking trail became today’s shuttle road.

Is sunrise the best time to go?

Sunrise is the signature experience, especially if you enjoy silhouettes, changing sky colors and photography. The Tourism Authority of Thailand also highlights the area for first light and star photography.

Plan to reach your viewing position 30–45 minutes before the local sunrise time, subject to the venue allowing entry then. This is a suggested photography buffer, not a published opening time. Add parking, ticketing and uphill-transfer time before that.

Clouds can create beautiful colors, but they can also hide the sun and distant islands. Mist and a clear sunrise are possibilities, never promises. Do not plan the whole visit around recreating one photograph.

If getting up before dawn would make your holiday less enjoyable, a daytime café visit is a good alternative. You can still appreciate the shape of the bay without a very early hotel departure.

For a different coastal outing, compare this mainland sunrise visit with our Promthep Cape sunrise and sunset guide. Choose according to your hotel location and the time of day you actually want to travel.

Can you see the Milky Way?

Samed Nang Chee is also associated with night-sky photography. One of the photographs in our collection records the stars above the area in 2016, and TAT identifies the viewpoint as a place for photographing the Milky Way.

That does not mean the Milky Way is visible every night. Cloud, moonlight, season and the direction of the sky all affect what you can see. A long-exposure photograph can also show more detail than your eyes.

Anyone planning a night visit should arrange access with the relevant property first. A café opening time does not establish permission to enter its grounds at night.

How do you get there from Phuket?

A pre-arranged car with a driver or a suitable self-drive trip gives you control over the departure and return. For a sunrise visit, agree on the exact destination, pickup time, waiting period and return journey in advance.

As rough planning allowances:

Starting areaApproximate road time to the area
Phuket Airport and nearby northern areasAround one hour
Phuket Town or PatongAround 1.5–2 hours
Karon, Kata or RawaiAround 2 hours or longer

These are broad estimates, not guaranteed journey times. Check the route from your actual hotel and add time for traffic, weather and the uphill transfer. The boutique property itself describes its airport journey as approximately 45–55 minutes.

Do not assume it will be easy to find an on-demand return car after an early visit. Arrange a round trip or a confirmed collection. Our Phuket point-to-point transport guide can help you think through the transfer options; confirm that your chosen driver covers this mainland destination.

Do you need to walk up the hill?

On our 2016 visit, we walked uphill for about 20–30 minutes to reach the viewpoint we visited. For the more recent Bay View Café experience described here, the uphill journey took about five minutes by shuttle. These timings describe different visits in the area, not a verified before-and-after account of the same route. TAT also describes paid uphill shuttle access at the main viewpoint.

Follow the arrangements at the venue you booked. Ask where to park or meet the vehicle, whether walking is permitted, and how the return transfer works. Do not assume a normal taxi can drive to every viewing terrace.

For anyone with mobility needs, ask about the whole route: boarding the shuttle, steps after arrival, toilets and access to the actual viewing area. An uphill vehicle does not automatically mean the property is step-free.

What is Bay View Café?

Bay View Café is part of Sametnangshe Boutique, with an elevated setting overlooking Phang Nga Bay. It suits visitors who want to enjoy the scenery over a drink or meal and spend time at a seated viewing area.

Bay View Café sign identifying the café at Sametnangshe Boutique

The official website currently lists café hours as 07:00–18:00 daily, checked on 27 October 2026. Reconfirm before traveling. In particular, a 07:00 opening does not establish access for a pre-dawn sunrise visit.

Bay View Café shuttle fee and dining-discount conditions

For the café visit information supplied by Sea Me Again on 27 October 2026, the package costs ฿300 per person and covers the shuttle with access to a conditional food-and-beverage discount.

The dining discount applies only when food and beverage spending exceeds ฿600 per person. Paying ฿300 for the shuttle package does not automatically mean that amount can be deducted from any small order.

If your spending is below the qualifying threshold, budget for the shuttle package plus your food and drinks without that discount. Before ordering, check the discount amount, eligible items and how the per-person condition is applied to a group bill. These conditions relate to the Bay View Café package described here; confirm the latest ticket terms at the counter.

Beyond Skywalk Nangshi is a separate resort and attraction with a glass-and-steel viewing walkway. Do not use a café photograph as an illustration of that skywalk, or assume the venues share a ticket.

For a relaxed outing, choose one main venue and give yourself time there. You do not need to visit every property to enjoy the bay.

Is staying overnight worthwhile?

An overnight stay may be worth considering if sunrise is the main reason for your visit and you would prefer to avoid a long pre-dawn drive from southern Phuket.

Sametnangshe Boutique and Beyond Skywalk Nangshi both list accommodation on their official websites. Check the room category, actual view and access to the viewing areas before booking; a stay in the area does not guarantee the same panorama from every room.

Our older photographs also show camping in 2016. They are a record of that earlier visit, not confirmation that the same campsite, tents, prices or facilities are available now. Anyone wanting a camping stay should verify it directly with the current operator.

A simple itinerary from Phuket

For sunrise: Arrange your return transport, check the weather and first entry, and work backward from the local sunrise time. Reach your viewing position before dawn, stay as the bay becomes brighter, then have breakfast once your chosen venue is serving. Return to Phuket or continue with a separately arranged mainland outing.

For a daytime café visit followed by sunset: Leave Phuket at a comfortable time, visit Samed Nang Chee or Bay View Café during the day, and allow time for the uphill transfer, a meal and photographs. Then drive toward Sarasin Bridge for a walk and sunset views before returning to your hotel. Check that day’s sunset time and plan your departure from the café around the road journey, parking and enough time to reach the old pedestrian bridge before sunset. This works as a relaxed daytime-to-evening outing; the sunset view depends on the weather.

For an overnight visit: Arrive during daylight, settle into your accommodation and confirm the next morning’s viewing access. This makes it easier to understand the layout before walking around in darkness.

At Sea Me Again, our planning advice is to choose your pace first. A scenic stop becomes less enjoyable when the day depends on several tightly timed connections.

Can you combine it with a Phang Nga Bay boat tour?

The viewpoint shows Phang Nga Bay from above; a boat trip lets you experience the limestone formations from water level. They can complement each other, but a combined day needs the right departure point and enough transfer time.

If you want to explore the bay by water, see our James Bond Island speedboat day trip for the current itinerary and booking details.

That published speedboat itinerary does not list a Samed Nang Chee stop. Plan these as separate outings on different days. A sunrise visit should not put you at risk of missing a scheduled hotel pickup or boat departure.

What should you bring?

Bring comfortable shoes with grip, drinking water, sun protection, a charged phone and a small amount of cash. A light layer can be useful before dawn, while a compact rain cover can protect your belongings during changeable weather.

For photography, clean your lens and take a few wide landscape shots as well as portraits. Keep away from unprotected edges, leave room for other visitors and stay on the permitted paths.

Do you need a boat to visit?

No. You reach the area by road, then use the access arrangements of your chosen hillside venue.

Is it worth visiting if I miss sunrise?
