Opal Suchata Chuangsri, the Phuket-born winner of Miss World 2025, became the first woman from Thailand to win the title. Her story adds a human face to an island many travelers first know through its beaches and sea views. [1][2]

Think of Phuket, and a familiar picture appears: blue water, palm trees and an evening sky turning gold. Those scenes are a lovely reason to visit. Learning about someone who comes from the island gives the place another dimension.

Opal’s story invites us to look at Phuket through its people too: their ambitions, the work they put into them, and the ways they choose to help others.

Who is Opal Suchata, and what is her connection to Phuket?

Known as Opal, Suchata Chuangsri was born in Phuket and grew up in a family working in the hotel business. Miss World’s 2025 introduction described her as speaking Thai, English and Chinese. Her schooling later took her to Triam Udom Suksa School in Bangkok, where she focused on Chinese studies. [1]

Her story therefore connects a Phuket upbringing with an education beyond the island. The languages are an interesting part of that portrait: alongside her public role representing Thailand, she has studied how to communicate across cultures.

For visitors, that background offers another way to think about the island. Phuket is a holiday destination, but it is also a home where people study, work, raise families and plan futures that may take them far beyond its shores.

A student with ambitions beyond the stage

During the 2025 competition, Opal was studying political science with a focus on international relations at Thammasat University. Her official contestant profile described an ambition to become an ambassador and interests in psychology and anthropology. [6][10]

These details give us a fuller introduction to the person behind the title. Alongside modeling and pageantry, her interests extend to how people think, live and relate to one another. Her stated career ambition also points toward a future in which representing her country could take another form.

Her pageant journey: progress over several years

Opal’s international win followed an earlier national-pageant journey. She entered Miss Universe Thailand in 2022, initially placing third runner-up before later being elevated to second runner-up. She returned to the competition in 2024, representing Bangkok, and won Miss Universe Thailand on 14 July 2024. Her Phuket birthplace and the province she represented in that contest are different parts of her biography. [7]

That return is a useful detail in her story. The first competition did not give her the national crown; she came back two years later and won it. Her success developed across more than one appearance.

On 22 April 2025, she was named Miss World Thailand, opening the next chapter of her international journey. [1]

When did she win Miss World 2025?

The final was held on 31 May 2025 at the HITEX Exhibition Centre in Hyderabad, India. Opal won the 72nd Miss World competition, which brought together 108 contestants, and received the crown from the previous winner, Krystyna Pyszková of Czechia. [2]

She also won the multimedia component. A separate official report recorded more than 2.3 million views on her contestant-app presence. This achievement shows that her participation reached audiences through the competition’s digital platform as well as its stage. [8]

That international recognition gives Phuket a story to share alongside its scenery. It also gives young people an example of an ambition reaching a much larger audience.

Opal For Her: giving beauty a purpose

Opal’s advocacy grew from a difficult experience in her teens. According to Miss World, she underwent surgery at 16 for a benign breast lump. Her Opal For Her project promotes breast health awareness and early detection. [3]

The project gave that personal experience a public purpose. Miss World’s account describes educational podcasts, fundraising, screening events with hospitals and contact with health officials. The aim is to make information and support easier to reach, including for younger women. [3]

Her work continued beyond the competition. In August 2025, Miss World reported her partnership with the Kanchanabaramee Foundation to support breast screening and education in Thai communities. The initiative included mobile mammography services that could reach people facing barriers to care. [4]

The work also took her overseas. In August 2025, she joined Miss World Asia Krishnah Gravidez at the opening of a breast cancer screening centre in Dokiparru, India. They visited the facility and met doctors and patients. [9]

These are concrete examples of what her advocacy looks like away from a final-night speech: education, partnerships and time spent with the people a project hopes to help.

This is the part of her story we find particularly meaningful. A public platform can draw attention to its owner; it can also help its owner draw attention to other people’s needs. Opal’s work gives the word “beauty” a practical expression through service.

A glimpse of the person behind the crown

Her official 2025 profile also includes lighter details. It lists an unusual talent for playing the ukulele backwards and says that she had sixteen cats and five dogs. [6]

These small details make a formal contestant biography feel more personal. An international title introduces us to someone’s public achievements; hobbies and animals give us a glimpse of the everyday interests alongside them.

The same profile recalls a supporter telling Opal that her example had offered encouragement during cancer treatment. [6] That personal connection helps explain the human meaning of an awareness campaign: behind its public message are individual people who may feel less alone.

Recognition after her Miss World win

In March 2026, Opal was named one of the Bangkok Post Women of the Year. Miss World’s report highlighted her work on breast health awareness and access to screening. [10]

This recognition adds a further chapter to her biography. The pageant result remains the milestone many readers know first, while her continued advocacy gives them more to learn about how she has used that visibility.

Her Phuket connection continued after the crown

Miss World later described Phuket as Opal’s hometown when reporting her appearance at Central Phuket for Vogue’s Night Out. The event took place on 29 March 2026. [5]

Her appearance added another chapter to her connection with the island after her international win.
